Since 1 January 2026, Belgian VAT-registered companies have been required to send their B2B invoices via Peppol. This raises the same question for many VMEs: Do we also have to use Peppol?
The short answer: no, a VME is not subject to VAT and is therefore not subject to this obligation. That does not mean that Peppol is not interesting. Most suppliers that work with a VME are subject to VAT, so Peppol is mandatory for them. That is why it is not such a bad idea to register your VME with Peppol, so that your suppliers can send their invoices directly and automatically to your VME.
What is Peppol exactly?
Peppol (Pan-European Public Procurement Online) is a European network that enables the secure and automatic exchange of digital invoices.
You can think of it as a kind of 'postal service for invoices', but entirely digital:
- Invoices are no longer sent by post or email in PDF format.
- Suppliers send them in a standardised format.
- The invoice is automatically recorded in the recipient's software.
- No more copying and pasting, no more errors, everything is perfectly structured.
Governments have been using Peppol for several years now, and now it has also become the standard between businesses. It is faster, more secure and ensures that invoices can be processed immediately.
Why it is interesting for your VME
Although it is not mandatory, is, is een Peppol-registratie van je VME wel handig. Zo kunnen leveranciers hun facturen rechtstreeks naar je VME sturen, wat je financiële administratie een pak makkelijker en veiliger maakt.
Connect to Peppol with OpenVME

To facilitate this for our users, we are launching our own Peppol integration in the OpenVME user platformBy activating the connection:
- Your VME is automatically registered in Peppol (if it isn't already).
- All Peppol invoices will be received directly in OpenVME and will automatically appear in your VME's financial management.
If you also activate the bank link (Ponto) in your OpenVME, you will no longer have to do any administrative work for the financial management of your VME. Invoices and transactions arrive fully automatically and costs are distributed among the co-owners using the correct allocation key!
